From Funding Gap to Growth Capital

Europe’s €5 Billion Scaleup Fund Backs a New Generation of Tech Champions

The Scaleup Europe Fund is rapidly taking shape as a major new force in European growth financing. With a target size of €5 billion and EQT as its independent investment manager, the fund has already backed six European technology companies across space, artificial intelligence, computing infrastructure and healthcare. Together, the investments show how Europe intends to provide promising technology companies with the capital to scale globally while maintaining strong European roots.

Europe’s scaleup financing gap

Europe has built a highly productive research, startup and deep-tech ecosystem. Yet the transition from promising startup to global technology leader remains a persistent challenge, particularly when companies require large growth rounds. The Scaleup Europe Fund was created to address this gap by combining European public and private capital for direct investment in leading European scaleups. The EU contribution is backed by Horizon Europe, linking Europe’s research and innovation policy with its growth-capital strategy.

With a target size of €5 billion, the fund focuses on strategically important fields including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, dual-use technologies, clean energy, space, biotechnology and medical innovation. EQT was selected as independent investment manager and makes investment decisions on commercial terms.

For INFINIRA Ventures, this development is particularly relevant. Connecting Europe’s innovation and investment ecosystems requires not only creating strong startups, but also financing pathways that enable research-driven companies to move from validation and early commercialisation towards international growth.

Six investments across strategic European technologies

The fund’s first six investments already span several areas considered critical to Europe’s technological competitiveness. The round sizes below refer to the overall financing rounds in which the Scaleup Europe Fund participated, rather than necessarily to the fund’s individual investment amount.

ICEYE – European space technology at scale

The fund’s first investment was in Finnish space technology company ICEYE, co-leading its €1 billion Series F. ICEYE operates an advanced synthetic aperture radar satellite constellation for Earth observation and sovereign intelligence. The company also illustrates a European innovation pathway: its founders met through Erasmus and ICEYE received early Horizon 2020 support before developing into a global space technology business.

Mistral AI – growth capital for European frontier AI

The Scaleup Europe Fund also co-led the €3 billion Series D of French AI company Mistral AI. The company develops large language models and a broader full-stack AI offering spanning models, computing infrastructure and enterprise applications. The scale of the financing highlights the capital requirements involved in competing at the global frontier of artificial intelligence.

The Exploration Company – scaling European space transportation

The fund participated in The Exploration Company’s $450 million Series C. The Franco-German space company is developing reusable orbital transportation systems, including its Nyx spacecraft, with the ambition of strengthening Europe’s independent capabilities for transporting cargo to and from space.

Lovable – scaling AI-powered software development

Stockholm-based Lovable raised $400 million in Series C financing, with the Scaleup Europe Fund participating as co-lead. Its AI-powered platform enables users to build software applications using natural language. The company combines rapid international expansion with a stated intention to maintain its centre of gravity in Stockholm.

EUCLYD – investing in Europe’s AI infrastructure

The portfolio extends beyond AI applications into the infrastructure required to power them. EUCLYD raised more than €200 million in Series A financing for its work on advanced compute and hardware infrastructure designed for AI workloads, adding a semiconductor and computing-infrastructure dimension to the fund’s portfolio.

Tandem Health – bringing medical AI into European healthcare

In healthcare, the Scaleup Europe Fund led Tandem Health’s $100 million Series B. The Swedish healthtech company develops AI solutions for clinicians, supporting areas such as medical documentation and clinical workflows. The financing is intended to support further product development and expansion across European healthcare markets.

An emerging European growth-capital strategy

Taken together, the six investments reveal a broad but coherent strategy. They span satellites, space transportation, frontier AI, AI-enabled software, compute infrastructure and medical AI, while sharing strong European roots, technology-intensive business models and ambitions to compete internationally. The fund has repeatedly taken lead or co-lead positions, signalling an active role in mobilising the large financing rounds required for European scaleups.

The portfolio also strengthens a critical part of Europe’s financing continuum. Horizon Europe, the European Innovation Council and national and regional programmes can support technologies from scientific discovery through validation and early commercialisation. The Scaleup Europe Fund addresses the later stage, when successful companies may require hundreds of millions - or even billions - of euros to expand globally.

Connecting Europe’s innovation and investment ecosystems

For INFINIRA Ventures, these investments reinforce the importance of connecting the full innovation and financing journey. Building globally competitive deep-tech companies requires credible pathways from research funding to venture creation, seed and growth investment, supported by intellectual property strategies, market validation, strong teams, investor readiness and industrial partnerships.

This is where INFINIRA positions itself: connecting Europe’s innovation and investment ecosystems, helping research-driven ventures become investment-ready and linking promising technologies with the capital, expertise and networks required for growth. The Scaleup Europe Fund adds an important new piece to that landscape - European innovation, backed by European capital, with the ambition to compete globally.
